Million Mom March of Northern Virginia
On May 14, 2000 - Mother's Day - 750,000 mothers and their loved ones joined together on the Washington Mall to demand that Congress enact common-sense gun legislation. On that historic day, millions of Americans heard and heeded our call for sensible gun laws and safe kids. There are now Million Mom March chapters in nearly every state in the Union. Virginia is one of them.
About Us
WHO WE ARE
The Northern Virginia Million Mom March is a grassroots volunteer organization made up of mothers from every walk of life, and of every race, religion, and politcal affiliation. Our mission is to provide support to victims and survivors of gun trama and to prevent gun death and injury in our communities, state, and nation. We are Moms and others who have lost children, husbands, siblings, and friends to gun violence or gun accidents. And we are Moms who have lost no one...and never want to.
WHAT WE WANT
- We are not anti-gun ownership: We are inclusive. Many of our members are gun owners. We don’t want to ban guns. But we do want reasonable, responsible and enforceable gun laws.
- Close the “gun show loophole”: The Brady Law, which requires background checks for all gun buyers nationwide, has stopped over half a million felons and other prohibited purchasers from buying handguns from federally licensed firearm dealers. Yet at thousands of gun shows every year, and across backyard fences every day, anyone can buy a gun—as many guns as they like— no questions asked.
- Reinstate the federal ban on military-style assault weapons and on ammunition magazines of larger than 10 rounds: High-capacity magazines gave the Virginia Tech shooter the horrific firepower he needed to become a mass killer. Civilians should not be able to purchase .50-caliber sniper rifles and the Herstal Five- Seven handguns, engineered to fire ammunition that penetrates police soft body armor.
- Keep guns out of places where children and families gather: In Virginia, gun owners are allowed to carry their guns into parks, recreation centers, government buildings, and daycare centers. We work to keep them off of school property and university campuses, and also out of restaurants that serve alcohol.
- Enforcement of Gun Laws: We need to give our police and federal law enforcement officers the tools and resources they need to fight gun crimes, including illegal gun trafficking, corrupt gun dealers and potential terrorists. We call on all law enforcement officers to assume a no-nonsense approach in enforcing existing gun laws and to join us in our mutual crusade for stronger legislation.
